ABOUT NADIA J. MAHFIX

Nadia J. Mahfix (1982), is a self-taught photographer with a background in psychology from the International Islamic University, Malaysia. Growing up in the 90’s she identified with the musical movement of the time. The slogan ‘I Hate Myself and Want To Die’, made famous on a tee shirt worn by Kurt Cobain would come to define the hopelessness of an education, employment and a hyper-real urban existence that Nadia would spend her adolescence escaping from.

Receding inwards into herself, Nadia would begin to work on her own thoughts, visions and imagery. Through philosophy, music, literature and concepts of life and death, Nadia forged her own view of the world through the freeze frames of the camera. Through her early influences which include Hiroshi Sugimoto, Antoine D’Agata, Diane Arbus, Nadia has crafted her own voice and approach over the years, becoming one of the influential photographers out of Kuala Lumpur.

Nadia had been part of several group exhibitions such as 'Beyond Our City : Lights & Myths,' (2010) organized by Goethe-Institut, 'DATUM: KL – reViewKL,' (2011) organized by Malaysian Institute of Architects (PAM), 'The Two Mountains Photo Project,' (2014) a joint-exhibition of Malaysian and Japanese photographers, 'Perso(na); an investigation into self,' (2015) and the most recent one being 'Khabar dan Angin; an Excurcus on Faith' organized by Projek Dialog and funded by the High Commission of Canada. Nadia recently was made finalist at the prestigious Asian Women Photographer Showcase, and had the opportunity to exhibit her series 'Ghosts from the past', (2015) at the Objectifs Centre of Photography in Singapore. In addition, Nadia has self-published a photobook, 'Is This The [n]?' (2014) and sold-out all 80 copies available. Currently, Nadia continues to work on her personal practice in Kuala Lumpur.
